Acceleration Chart

The following chart explains the amount of acceleration that a starship can maintain. Thus, a SPD 3 starship with 20" of Flight can achieve 1G of acceleration.

Travel Time

Travel time can be calculated using the following formula:

This formula assumes that there is constant acceleration during the entire journey. For example:

The players want to fly to a Jumpgate that's 100 AUs away from their current location. Their ship is only capable of travelling at 1G acceleration. They accelerate for the entire journey which takes 2 x Square root of (100 / 1) = 2 x 10 = 20 days. However, when they arrive at the jumpgate, they'll be travelling very, very fast (in the neighbourhood of 17,280 kilometres per second, or about 5.8% of the speed of light).

Generally, ships shouldn't arrive at the jumpgate travelling that fast. Suppose the players arrive at the jumpgate and find that it's in reset mode? It'd take them 40 days to slow down, turn around, come back and try again. Instead, ships usually have two legs to their journey: first, they accelerate to the half-way point of the journey, rotate the ship in space, and then start decelerating to the end-point. It's interesting to note that it takes just as long to decelerate the ship as it takes to accelerate the ship.

The players want to fly to a Jumpgate that's 100 AUs away from their current location. Their ship is only capable of travelling at 1G acceleration. They accelerate for 50 AUs, rotate the ship in space and then decelerate for 50 AUs. Each leg of the journey takes 2 x Square root of (50 / 1) = 2 x 7 = 14 days. Thus the entire journey takes 28 days.
